Five things you can do today to reduce your plastic waste!
29th October 2020
We’ve all heard ‘reduce your plastic waste’ more times in 2020 than humanly possible, but there’s a reason for that. We NEED to reduce the amount of plastic we use as a planet – want refreshing on the reasons why? Click here for some David Attenborough!
Long story short, you need to reduce your plastic waste!
Here are five simple changes YOU can make today:
1. Grab yourself a reusable Water Bottle!
Were you aware that roughly 2,480,000 tonnes of plastic bottles and other plastic containers are put in the trash every year? Plastic water bottles make up the largest proportion of these. Not only does this pollute oceans and harm nature, but it’s posing threats to our entire planet as a whole! Where possible, say no to single-use plastic water bottles and grab yourself an SHO bottle now (there’s a pattern and size for everyone)!
2. You guessed it…same applies to Coffee Flasks!
The average person in the UK buys three take-out coffees a week, and you don’t need to be a mathematician to know that’s around 150 a year…150!! It’s not only an environmental saving you’ll make from using your own, but a large proportion of coffee shops offer a discount to those who bring a reusable cup (*a lot of cafes are honouring the discount throughout COVID on showing of a reusable cup, despite the fact you can’t use it). Choose from one of our finest Calix coffee flasks here.
3. Switch out cling film and foil for reusable beeswax wraps!
Cling film and foil are renowned for their durability, air-tight capabilities and, sadly, single-use nature. Beeswax wraps have been invented to shake up your food preservation habits – they’re what they say on the tin, and you can reuse them! You use them the same way as you’d use cling film or foil to wrap sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and other foods, but you wash them after use and use them over and over again!
Beeswax wraps come in all shapes and sizes so find some to suit your requirements.
4. Pack lunch in Tupperware that’ll last!
Bamboo products are becoming increasingly popular. They’re not only water-tight, but bamboo is sturdy and easy to get hold of. There are plenty of firms making beautiful bamboo lunch boxes, so if you’re a sucker for a good ol’ pack lunch (or the kids are at school), make sure you check them out! Don’t just sit for a cheap plastic on that’ll inevitably break imminently (also, it adds class to your lunch, trust us – tried and tested!).
5. Bake with reusable parchment paper!
Parchment paper is great for baking, no one likes cookies that stick to the tray (we’ve all been there). However, rather than opt for Supermarket parchment rolls, order some silicone mats that you can res-use thousands of time! As well as being naturally non-stick, they’re malleable and can be moulded into (almost) any shape you need! This doesn’t just help save the planet though, it’ll help you save money AND you’ll need to use less fat/oil for greasing, slightly reducing your fat intake!
